The Box Turtle is a subspecies of hinge-shelled turtles that belongs to the genus Terrapene. It is native to the Eastern United States and is characterized by its ability to completely retract its body into its shell, leaving only the plastron exposed. The Box Turtle has a hard armored shell that provides protection from predators, but young individuals are vulnerable due to their soft and pliable shells.
