Gelati Monastery is a medieval monastic complex located in the Imereti region of western Georgia. Founded in 1106, it was a centre of science and education, housing an academy that played a significant role in ancient Georgian culture. The monastery features a main church with well-preserved mosaic decoration and a large ensemble of paintings from various periods, including Byzantine and post-Byzantine art. Gelati Monastery is considered one of the largest medieval Orthodox monasteries in Georgia and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
