The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is a partnership of 18 agencies that provides grants and loans to developing countries to support projects that address global environmental issues, such as biodiversity loss, climate change, and pollution. The GEF was established in 1991 and has since become one of the largest multilateral financial institutions for the environment. It operates on a trust fund model, with contributions from its member agencies and participating countries.
