The Gotthard Base Tunnel is a 57-kilometer rail tunnel that links Erstfeld in the Uri canton to Bodio in the southern canton of Tessin, Switzerland. It is the world's longest train tunnel, surpassing Japan's Seikan Tunnel, and the deepest traffic tunnel with up to 2,300 meters of rock above it. The tunnel was constructed over a period of 17 years at a cost of approximately 12 billion Swiss franks.
