Highly Available STorage (HAST) is a software-based storage system that allows for the transparent storage of data on two physically separated machines connected over a TCP/IP network. It operates at the block level, providing disk-like devices in /dev/hast/ directory for use by file systems and applications. HAST works in a Primary-Secondary configuration, where one node is active and handles I/O requests while the other node serves as a backup.
