Mongolia is a landlocked country in East Asia, bordered by Russia to the north and China to the south. It is the world's 18th-largest country by area and one of the most sparsely populated, with a population of around 3.4 million people spread across 1.56 million square kilometres. The capital and largest city is Ulaanbaatar, home to roughly half the country's population.
Mongolia is known for its vast steppe grasslands, the Gobi Desert, and a rich nomadic heritage. The country was historically the centre of the Mongol Empire, the largest contiguous land empire in history, founded by Genghis Khan in 1206.
