Mount Athos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the easternmost peninsula of the Greek mainland, known for its monasteries, spiritual significance, and natural beauty. It is one of the most important centers of Eastern Orthodox spirituality and has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries. The site consists of 20 self-governing monasteries, as well as smaller sketes and hermitages, which are home to monks who follow a strict ascetic lifestyle.
