They Live is a 1988 American science fiction action horror film written, directed, and scored by John Carpenter. The film follows a rugged loner who stumbles upon the discovery that aliens are masquerading as humans and controlling society through subliminal advertising messages. Wearing special sunglasses allows him to see the truth behind the façade of everyday life. The film is based on Ray Nelson's 1963 short story 'Eight O'Clock in the Morning'.
